This was a second phase of the "GEFRIF" programme, "Management of the Forest Ecosystems of the Rif", designed to strengthen the work of the first phase (GEFRIF 1) of the programme which had concentrated on developing sustainable use of the forests, through the active involvement of the population. Plans for the socio-economic development of three pilot areas were developed based on realising the economic values of endemic natural resources such as aromatic & medical plants, mushroom, honey, and from the improvement of livestock practices. At the same time as improvements were made to the use of natural resources, considerable effort was put into upgrading the social infrastructure, by creating village committees and local development associations, coupled with raising the awareness and capability of the local population in applying the principles of self-development.(In association with Deutsche Forstservice GmbH (DFS), Germany)
